I think we've all seen I can play as dirty as anyone wants to make it, but I'd really rather just make movies the audience enjoys. And then personally enjoy the kick ass toys that come with that.
This is what Lucas understood, as merchandising from SW is what paid for ESB. There needs to be toys children want, and today games they want to play. What was unique about the franchise then was that by merchandising alone, it was entirely self sufficient.
Similarly the Prequels, which stretched into television, games, and comic books alike, all of which were popular. All of which covered the next.
This way he was able to make movies which went beyond the hollywood dramas, because he mostly paid for them himself. Personally I think he should be folded back in, and loudly.
As for the specific post, yes I did learn hollywood's rules the hard way, the same way hollywood learned mine. Something he and I have in common I think.
